Recommendations For Webfoot Retrievers Training
Re: Webfoot Kennels and Ray Godwin
I am usually hesitant to write letters of recommendation, but in the case of Webfoot and Ray I am thrilled to do it. I was made aware of Ray through a friend whose black lab was trained by Ray. I hunted for a year with this lab and was very impressed with her skills. In March of 2010 I brought home Rimi our Golden retriever and at 10 weeks introduced her to Ray. At that time he gave Beverly and me easy directions to follow to prepare her for training. I took her to Ray on June 11 and picked her up on November 11. This past duck season she had at least 150 retrieves as well as 25 retrieves on two pheasant shoots. I could not be more pleased. Ray simply did an exceptional job with Rimi.
The most important thing for me is that when I took Rimi back to Ray after a weekend at home, she would run to Ray with no hesitation. In other words she was happy to be there. Ray not only did an exception job with Rimi, he also took the time to train me and Beverly. Ray spent a number of hours making sure I was ready to handle Rimi in the field and this was critical – Ray tells you like it is and it was worth it this season. He also spent time with Beverly just working on walking Rimi at heel, and now Beverly is very confident on walks with Rimi and has no issue handling the training collar. Ray was also available to me during hunting season to answer questions and help with any handling issues. This eliminated a lot of heartache for both me and Rimi this past season.
In summary, I am very comfortable giving Ray my highest recommendation. He loves his dogs, they love him and the training was perfect. I had a wonderful retriever and companion this past season as well as a great family dog at home. I look forward to her on-going training with Ray – advanced handling is next. If I can every answer any questions please contact me.

Good afternoon, attached are a couple pictures of Dillon and myself on opening day. Overall, I believe he did very well for the first time in dove field. He was very obedient and when I sat down on my cooler and told him to sit and stay, he stayed right there until I released him. I want to thank you again for working with Dillon and getting him to where he is now.

To Whom It May Concern,
My dog just recently completed her training with Webfoot Retrievers. Over the past three months McKenzie has overcome the obstacles of force fetch and proper retrieving techniques. Working with Mr. Godwin I realized that his passion is to train animals. Throughout McKenzie’s training I was able to visit the facilities and training grounds to watch Mr. Godwin work with McKenzie and learn how to properly handle my dog in different situations. Through this, I realized how much passion Mr. Godwin has towards the sport. His objective is to train the dogs to love the sport in which they were breed for…
McKenzie is a two and a half year old Griffon Wired Haired Pointer. She is all of my pride and joy!!! I grew up around my grandfather who personally trained dogs on the side when he wasn’t training horses. Through this I felt I had what it would take to properly take McKenzie to the top level. During the past two years I was able to have her above and beyond proper obedience. She started fetching and loved the sport, until one day the bird tasted to good to let go!!! I was confused and could not understand the proper ways to force fetch a dog…
I met Mr. Godwin and was able to overcome this obstacle. Not only has McKenzie fully completed her training with Mr. Godwin, but he has taken it to the next level! The last weekend before she was ready to come home, Mr. Godwin personally spent the whole weekend with McKenzie and me. He went over the proper ways to handle her and the next steps that I need to take to have her on hand signal!!! He also has advised me to come back on weekends that I’m free so he can see McKenzie and help me further her in training. He has also sent numerous e-mails making sure she is doing well and back to her old self. I highly recommend anyone, with any breed, to contact Mr. Godwin. In the out come you will have a strong driven dog that loves the sport in which you are interested in!
McKenzie will be returning in the spring for Mr. Godwin to further her training. I will return with the same confidence that I left with. If anyone would like to give me a call I would be more than happy to promote my griffons’ success, or even show you how well she listens and works with confidence!!!

Dear Ray:
How can we ever begin to thank you for helping place Chester in our lives? He is truly loved – and loving – member of the Lewis family! He “talks” to us daily, and we share a “family howling” at least 2X’s a day! Chester is a creature of habit, and loves his car rides, scratches and overall “bonding” time!
For over 6 months now, we consistently receive compliments from neighbors and friends on how well-behaved and “mannered” Chester is! He doesn’t beg or bark when guests visit, yet serves as a wonderful watch/guard dog, letting us know when someone is in our yard or at our door (in case we haven’t noticed ourselves!)
Jim practices “heel, sit and stay” with Chester on his daily walks, and other dog owners are frequently heard remarking “how did you train him to do that?” Chester performs as if on auto-pilot, both on and off the leash.
Specifically, in terms of your training of Chester, we are thrilled with the following attributes Chester brought from his time with you, Ray:
· Completely house-broken;
· Expertly-trained – heels/sits/stays, retrieves, etc.;
· Water-savvy -he won’t go into our pool w/o our command – no worries;
· Respectful and wary of other dogs; he avoids confrontation at all costs, but is well-equipped to handle himself, if necessary;
· Wonderful “Protector” – he remains tentative with strangers, which is good; he is concerned for our well-being 1st and foremost, and always alerts us of strange noises/people approaching;
· We’ve never had to lift a finger towards Chester; he implicitly understands NO, and becomes very embarrassed if he thinks he’s “let us down” or disappointed us in anyway; he is very mindful;
Ray, we cannot imagine our lives without Chester. He’s Jim’s pride and joy and “Mommy’s Baby Boy!” Again, thank you for matching us to the perfect dog for us, Chester Lewis!

To Whom It May Concern,
Ray Godwin is an excellent trainer with at least 25 years experience. Why and how I know this, is because I personally went to watch the training exercise, along with other clients. I learned the proper voice commands and training techniques, which allowed me on the weekends, when I picked up my dog, to know what Ray had done instead of guessing. I personally have taken horses to state championships and trained 4 Labradors to hunt and have basic obedience skills. However, I was not as knowledgeable as Ray and realized that. I hired Ray to train my dog and take him all the way to the Masters. My dog excelled so fast, Ray said it would take 6 months to get him his Junior Hunter title, and he did it in 3 months. If you would like to see dedication at work in front of your eyes, I would recommend you go and watch Ray at work!
Sincerely,

Re: Recommendation for Webfoot Retrievers
Dear Sir or Madam:
I would like to lend my strongest recommendation for Ray Goodwin of Webfoot Retrievers. I have known Ray for many years, and his reputation for training is exemplary. We have many customers who have used his service with great success. I think that his professionalism, knowledge, and skill would be an asset to your event. Please contact me if I can lend anymore information on Ray’s behalf.
Sincerely,
Dee Meador
To Whom It May Concern:
I, Barbara Stockman, witnessed Ray Godwin’s training, and have watched him show and train the dogs he had. His heart is in every dog he works with. It is very impressive to see him in action. He is into each and every dog. He is passionate about his animals, whether it is from basic training, or to an event in a Field Trial Competition. He cares for every dog, as it was his own!
Sincerely,
Barbara Stockman
To Whom It May Concern:
The past two years we have had Ray Godwin of Webfoot Retrievers training three of our dogs. In that time we have found Ray Godwin to be a fine trainer who has taught our dogs discipline, how to hunt, and to be wonderful pets and sporting dogs. He has, also,
worked with one of our dogs, who has been deaf since birth to achieve her Junior Hunting Title at the age of 14 months, despite her handicap. Ray Godwin’s commitment to excellence in training, love, regard and dedication to dogs is second to none. His continued participation and support of The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition would not only be a tremendous asset to the event, but also, to the many who attend seeking advice and direction with their training and dogs needs.
Sincerely,
Leslie and Beau Kern
August of 2004 I sent a 9 month old Male Irish Setter, with major show wins, to Ray for Field Training. I have bred and shown dogs for 35 years myself and this is the first time I have ever entrusted a dog to a trainer away from home. Friends of mine had a dog with Ray and I saw what good condition he was in, how well he did in the field, and how much he liked Ray. Based on this and other friends who have used Ray, I felt very confident doing this.
Vince has come home several times with and without Ray. He loves Ray and if he thinks Ray is leaving without him, he starts barking for fear he is going to be left.Vince has overcome his shyness, developed his confidence, and has proven his ability in the field. Vince has his Junior Hunter and is starting Senior Hunter and some Field Trials.I am anticipating that he will be our first dual Champion.
Besides his excellent care and training of the dogs, Ray also treats each dog as if it were his own. He sleeps in the truck with the dogs at competions, rather than going to a motel.
Ray has brought out the natural birdiness of my show bred dogs. Vince's sister is now over with Vince at Ray's, and doing very well. She will be competing in JH this month.
As a breeder who never has never sent a dog away, I am very comfortable with my decision to send my dogs to Ray Godwin, and I would recommend him for field and obedience training.

Ray’s Recommendation
I would like to take the opportunity to recommend Ray Godwin as a retriever trainer. I have known Ray now for about eight months. He took my 4 month old black lab at the time in his life when he thought he didn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to and gave me back a lab that was ready to work and learn. My dog, Doc, has been a pleasure to work with since his training with Ray, and he has progressed through the AKC hunt test program to earn his Junior Hunter Qualification by the time he was 10 months old. Ray has been extremely helpful in Doc’s continuing training program. He gladly helps me through any problems that develop because I have not been trained as well as Doc. As a member of Ray’s weekly training group, several of us and our dogs get the opportunity to simulate hunting and hunt test situations that help us to be better prepared for the next competition or hunt. Ray understands what makes a retriever do the things that dogs do, and he can use that knowledge to train them to be better retrievers. He truly loves dogs and his work. The best recommendation that I can give him is that he cares about dogs and works hard to get the best out of each one of them. I gladly recommend Ray to train you and your retriever.
Recommendation/Thomas Liepman/Chessie puppies from Ray Godwin/Brant and Charlotte
A little over a year ago, I began looking for a companion and duck hunting buddy. I originally started looking at labs, but grew bored of seeing the same dog, with little differences between litters and breeders. I then started looking into other breeds. Intrigued by Chessies, I talked to Ray Godwin, as he is one of the premier Chessie breeders in SC. After talking with him, and meeting his personal dog, Brant, I knew that was the dog for me. I heard many stereotypes of how Chessies are hard-headed, aggressive, independent, etc. I've found none of them to be true. I attribute this breeding, training and socialization. Trader, my 1-year old, light dead grass Chessie is a handsome 85 pound lady killer. I get compliments on his looks and build everywhere I go. He has a wonderful personality, loves everyone he meets and is a great house dog. He still loves being outside and takes and is an amazing duck hunter. The picture below shows him in Stuttgart, AR at 7 months old with a log full of ducks. What more can you ask for. Getting a puppy from Ray Godwin and having him help us train has made all the difference. If someone is looking for something a bit different, with a great personality and a great sporting dog, I would highly recommend Ray Godwin, Brant and Webfoot Retrievers.
Dear Ray,
We wanted to let you know how pleased we are with the training job that you did with our Black Lab, Miss Chiffa.
During the course of the 6 months that she spent with you she was changed from a timid dog lacking in self-confidence to a confident and competent retriever. Your patient and sensitive approach to her training was undoubtedly what made this success possible.
Holly, Chiffa and I have just returned from a 2 week pheasant hunt in North Dakota. We had a wonderful time chasing the wild ringnecks around in the river bottoms, CRP grasslands and endless crop fields.
Chiffa was out in front finding and flushing birds every minute. She performed beautifully the whole time. She behaved well and was easy to handle in the field. She hunted within shotgun range and retrieved to hand every pheasant killed over her.
One day we were hunting the banks of the Cannonball River and dropped 4 birds in the middle of the River. Even though she had not seen them fall, she jumped into the icy river and retrieved all of them. She also did a great job finding and retrieving cripples from thick, brushy cover where we could not go.
It was our first experience hunting wild pheasants with a retriever and we really enjoyed it. We hope it will become an annual event. Maybe you could join us next year!
Best regards,
Mark and Holly Peterson

I own a 2 1/2 year old lab that trained with Ray from about 10-14 months of age (with a 3 week break). We have been part of Ray's training group since that time. We have been extremely pleased with our results. Cider has earned her Started Hunting Retriever (UKC), Junior Hunter (AKC) and Upland Hunter (UKC) titles--three of the ribbons earned by my then 9 year old daughter. Cider is a joy to hunt with and a an obedient, friendly family pet. Several of my hunting friends have been impressed with her manners and marking and upland skills. We plan to acquire a yellow lab puppy from Ray in the next year or so.
Cider had little natural birdiness when she started with Ray and was very stubborn over force fetch, but Ray was more persistent and determined and turned her around. I think many other trainers would have washed her out. She loves to hunt and she retrieved lots of ducks, dove, and quail this year as well as a few pheasant and chukkas.

David and I have Gordon Setters, a Field Spaniel and Irish Water Spaniels. We both judge AKC pointing breed hunting tests and have been active showing and breeding dogs for about 17 years in the AKC arena. Dave hunted as a young man, but hasn't hunted actively in over 20 years. He nor I are especially gifted "trainers"...
We show all our dogs, primarily, but feel that they should be able to do what they are bred to do...our Gordons are usually hunting titled(AKC). We sent Bogey, one of our IWS to Ray when he was 7 mos old. This was a real departure for us, as we love our pups and feel having them around while they are younger is especially important.
We had met Ray through another IWS friend and he had two of our older IWS females for a while before we sent Bogey. I was immediately struck by Ray's connection with the animals and his "dog knowledge"..not all trainers that I have used have that gift. They know how to "train" but have little understanding of different breeds or acknowledge that different breeds might require a special methods to accomplish the same goal.
Bogey is now 14 mos old. He completed his UKC Started Hunting Retreiver title on St. Patrick's day..(Fitting, huh?). He got his first AKC JH leg last weekend. Ray has taken a special interest in Bogey, taking him to SE Wildlife expo in Charleston, mostly for socialization purposes as I push him to make sure Bogey will be used to meeting people and ready to show very soon now. He has been very, very responsible to keep in touch with me re: his progress and Bogey's issues, problems and successes. You should let him know what you want, keep in touch, show interest in the dog and rest assured, that Ray will train your dog, in a kind, consistent manner. He will take into consideration that it is a young dog. He has displayed infinite patience, tailoring training to Bogey's energy level, bringing him into the house and making a concerted effort to bond with him so Bogey will hunt for him. Ray is easy to deal with, answering any of my ignorant questions (this is my first retreiver). We have been most pleased with the results and have enjoyed getting to know Ray. He is extraordinarily patient, more than I would be and the dogs adore him. That is the best recommendation that I can give...He doesn't charge extra for training owners, either BTW- ...

To all Lab Lovers:
What a thrill to have a Webfoot Retriever! Our Chloe is a gem. She is the most beautiful English Black Lab we have ever seen. Ray Godwin was wonderful to talk with and work with, both before and after we received Chloe. He really educated us about his labs.
We cannot underemphasize what an excellent trainer Ray is. Chloe has a dominant personality, and at 9 and 10 weeks, we were beside ourselves because of her continuous biting. Ray suggested that we bring Chloe to him for a couple weeks of training and thank goodness we listened to his words of wisdom! We spent some time with Ray and his labs – it is so obvious just how very much he loves them.
After 2 weeks, we “retrieved” our retriever and what a transformation! Chloe is wonderful, the biting stopped, and she is so much more receptive to our training.
As I said to Ray, he really speaks the dog language and rather than a horse whisperer, Ray is “The Dog Whisperer!”
Thank you from Bill and Elaine Frantz, and Webfoot’s Elegant Chloe

Subject: Boykin Training
Guy`s if yall have read any of my post`s over the last couple month`s, then you have seen me talk about Ray Godwin of webfoot retriever`s.I bought Cody my Boykin Spaniel to hunt with and train myself, but I soon realized I had gone as far as I could go with his training on my own. Then Drylock2 gave me the best advice and help I could have ever asked for. He told me to give Ray a call at webfoot. I did and from the first phone conversation up untill these last two months
I have seen first hand how much Ray cares about his dogs and how knowledgeable he is at retriever training. He not only cares about his dogs but he is also a friend to all the owners as well. Ray will take your dog to train by himself all the time giving it the best care possible, this I have seen first hand,he will also let you bring your dog to him on a weekly basis and train you and your dog at the same time. This to I have seen first hand. I chose the latter because I wanted to learn as much as I wanted Cody my pup to learn, and I have not been disapointed. Ray teaches me the techniques and commands and watches with a close eye to see that Im learning and doing them right. Cody has progressed rapidly and with not only his drive to retrieve but his learning of all facets of retrieving for hunting and hunt test`s and he does this with me handling as well as Ray. Ray not only trains with me and Cody during the week but he constantly will e-mail or call me at home, even in the evenings to see how the training is going and if we need any help. Now that is caring and dedication at it`s finest. If there`s anyone here or anyone anywhere who wants to have a well trained dog,I can honestly say you wont go wrong with Ray Godwin and Webfoot Retrievers.Even if it`s for a light refresher course,a simple command your having a problem teaching,or the full training, Ray does it all and very well I might add. Give him a call or visit his web site. You won`t find a nicer guy,and he will be willing to answer any question or help with any problem your dog might be having.

Subject: Training my Irish Water Spaniels
I was nervous about sending Rhiannon off to a field trainer. I've always done
all my own showing and training. But I finally had to admit that I don't have
the time, energy, locations, etc to properly train a dog. Sunnee I wasn't to
worried about. But sending a young teenage IWS? I told Ray (Godwin not
Weaver) my concerns - and he said no problem. He does training days with kids
every week (who all think the goofy brown dog is cool). Plus there are always
people around.
Well... I believed him but I was still concerned (nobody can take care of MY
baby like I can ). Then I went to the demo. It was for a sub-group of
the Wild Turkey Federatation called Women in the Outdoors. Ray opened with
his master hunter (most titled chessie in history) and then would allow the
women to work with the other dogs and then would close with Rhian (did 5
demos throughout the day).
Well, he asked each woman what dog she wanted to work. Some wanted the
handsome young chessie, the cute lab, etc. Well one woman asked to work the
big brown dog. I thought he'd say no. Imagine my shock when he handed her
Rhiann's collar and said sure... go get her. You know how IWS can be - they
are not always happy to go off with strangers. Well she walked over to
Rhiannon who was quivering with excitement. Put the collar on her and took
her to the line.
I thought this picture was hilarious. I don't think the woman appreciated
that Rhiannon waited to shake until after she had retrieved to hand.
Especially since they were only bumpers.. no where near as exciting as birds.

Subject: Webfoot Retrievers Talent
Ray Godwin is the most experienced and successful dog trainer I have ever met. Webfoot Retrievers truly live up to their name. After just three months with Ray, our standard poodle, Mya, would rather retrieve than do anything else! Whether it's a bumper, one of my son's toys, or just a rock off the ground, she will keep bringing us things to fetch until we literally get tired of throwing them! Not only does she thoroughly love to retrieve, but she is more disciplined and well behaved than I ever hoped she would be. She never needs to be on a lead anymore, even if there are other dogs around. People are always commenting on how well behaved she is and find it hard to believe she only received three months of training. Her obedience and drive to retrieve are a testament to Ray's talents. I would highly recommend Webfoot Retrievers to anyone who desires a top notch, well rounded retriever.

I would like to take this opportunity to commend Ray Godwin on his sincere devotion in maintaining the high breeding standards of Webfoot Retrievers. It was the reputation created by these standards that led me to Ray and ultimately the purchase of my first "Webfoot Retriever." It was clear from the first time that I met Ray that his puppies and their well being came first and foremost. As a result, my Yellow Lab has been everything that Webfoot Retrievers are promised to be. I am so pleased with Ray and his dogs that I now participate in Ray's training program so as to take full advantage of all that Webfoot Retrievers can offer my dog. I will gladly show my Lab and recommend Ray Godwin to anyone who passes the screening requirements.
Thank you Ray,

Hey Ray,
Just wanted to let you know that your website is looking great! We're really enjoying our Chessies and are
glad that we chose them as our next breed to have. There is definitely nothing like a Chessie. We can't believe
how intelligent they are. They amaze us every day!
Here's a picture of the female we got from you last October. She's absolutely beautiful, and we can't keep her out

Ray Godwin was recommended to us for pointing training by Helen & David Howard,
and we will highly recommend him to others. He took our gun shy, know nothing, six-month old Gordon Setter puppy, helped him overcome his fear of guns and taught him how to enjoy pointing and hunting.
Our Blackhurst Hagrid BBBirdhunter earned his Junior Hunter title in four out of four tries.
Hagrid was named in hopes of being big, burly and a lover of all animals. Thanks to Ray, he also loves to hunt.
He is on his way to becoming a Master Hunter, and has a good time staying with Ray and all of the other dogs in training.
Don’t hesitate to call us! Ed & Norma Rockwell

Sincerely,
Ted Andrae IV

" Ray is a wonderful instructor, and professional in every sense of the word. He has instructed retriever dog demonstrations and training classes at several of our Women in the Outdoors Events, and is highly recommended !

Sincerely,

Subject: Webfoot Retrievers
Thank you Ray,
Cal Thompson

Hey Ray,
Just wanted to let you know that your website is looking great! We're really enjoying our Chessies and are
glad that we chose them as our next breed to have. There is definitely nothing like a Chessie. We can't believe
how intelligent they are. They amaze us every day!
Here's a picture of the female we got from you last October. She's absolutely beautiful, and we can't keep her out
of the pool! Pics were taken about one month ago.
